The Many Faces of Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln Embarking : Springfield, IL

Given that this year commemorates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, I thought I'd post a few of the many renditions I saw of Lincoln while I was on the road. These are in addition to the several I posted from the road. Most of these were taken in Springfield, Illinois.

Contemporary Lincoln : Springfield Public Library : Springfield, IL

Lincoln a la Jelly Belly : Springfield, IL

And, because it's so unique, come back tomorrow and see the chopper made to memorialize Lincoln.* It's pretty darn cool!

Lincoln as Portrait : Springfield, IL

Lincoln in Stone : Mount Rushmore, SD

* I only posted one photo of it previously. Tomorrow's entry will show you some of the detail.

All great shots, but I think I like the second and third from the bottom the best. They are most unusual.

Great images. My favorite is at the top. I like you can see your reflection in the jelly belly image.

Very interesting construction in the contemporary assemblage.

Wonderful images of such an iconic man.

Maya: Thanks! I like the second-to-last one, too. The jelly bean one was hard to shoot. I should have used a polarizing filter on that one. Still, it's kind of fun.

Andrea: The top one was a bit of a challenge, but I think I nailed it. As for my reflection in the window, does that mosaic of Lincoln make me look fat? ;-)

Babooshka: I think there are probably more statues and representations of Lincoln in the U.S. than there are of Washington. He really is rather iconic.

Jelly beans! Very cool. I'd be too tempted to eat one or two!

Boy that "Lincoln" guy really got around. Who is he and why is he famous anyway? Musta done somethin' pretty cool for everyone to go makin' statues over him. Movie star?

Marley: Jelly Belly is famous for making portraits of people out of their jelly beans. Their rise to prominence came out of the Reagan Administration and Pres. Reagan's love of these little flavorful candies. They're the best jelly beans around. In fact, I believe they're the official maker of Bertie Botts Every Flavored Bean for Harry Potter!

GIL: Good questions! Far as I can tell, he's some obscure woodsman from Kentucky who freed some slaves or something, but I'll have to get back to you on that! ;-) Actually, I just watched Henry Louis Gates' documentary about Lincoln on PBS and it was fascinating. Have you seen it?

Hey, you forgot our OWN Abe Lincoln of Brookville, OH Daily Photo ;^). He does resemble his famous cousin, especially around the eyebrows and lips!
This is a great series of captures. Who'd a thunk it, jelly beans!
