First United Church of Jesus Christ

First United Church of Jesus Christ: The first and the last

Hi folks! I'm back from my road trip and a few days of rest. Thought I'd start things up again by recommencing my Churches of 16th Street series. Not very auspicious; I promise tomorrow's content will be far more fun.

This is the First United Church of Jesus Christ located at 7901 16th Street NW. It is the first church you see on 16th Street if you're entering the District from Maryland and the last church you see as you leave the District. I couldn't find any information online about the church or congregation. If anyone knows the history of this church, let me know.

Update at 7:30 p.m.: Thanks to Andrea for finding a link to this church. I missed the word "Apostolic" in the name of the congregation. The one word resulted in a link. Here it is. Thanks, Andrea!

It has a mental institution feel to it, doesn't it. I've enjoyed your series DC!

Glad you're back, you've been missed. Did you make it through the SW heading home?

I was curious about this congregation and found some info. here about how this church and it's earlier ministries came to be:

VJ: Yeah, not the most flattering picture of this church, but then again, even if I got more up close and personal with this building, I still think it would come out looking institutional. Of course, it probably doesn't help that this photo is nearly a year old and I've gotten better at photographing this kind of thing... Hm. Glad you've enjoyed this series. I've enjoyed doing it.

Andrea: Did not make it through the SW back to DC. I'll be heading that way, though, in a few weeks. Looking forward to it. Thanks for finding the links to this congregation. I found the first one initially, but it's for a congregation in Baltimore. I confess, if I can't find a link for these churches in one or two clicks, I move on, so thank you for being more diligent than I was!

Marley: Thanks! It's good to be back.

Rob: Sad, but true. But, I enjoyed the ride and I'm glad others did, too!
