Badlands Confidential

The Badlands National Park : South Dakota

After enjoying a donut at Wall Drug, we climbed back in the car and headed up the road to see the dramatic geologic wonder known as the Badlands. If you haven't seen this phenomenon, it's like looking at a miniature version of the Grand Canyon. While it isn't nearly as awe-inspiring as the Grand Canyon, it certainly holds its own.

As Far As the Eye Can See : The Badlands

Cathedral : The Badlands

I wish we'd had a geologist along for the ride to explain the different strata to us, as well as the age of the rocks and formations and how they were formed. No doubt there are one or two of you out there who might be able to impart some geologic wisdom? In the mean time, here are a few pictures to enjoy.

Wow, that looks very interesting. It reminds me quite a bit of areas of Northern Arizona. I'll ask my dad about it (a geologist)...

We never made it to Badlands, so close. We wanted to high tail it to Yellowstone and had lots of driving to do. Now I'm bummed we missed it.
Did you stop at Crazy Horse?

As a western native, I don't get the Badlands--it looks like more of the same area that I already live in. I felt pretty much the same way about the Painted Desert in Arizona. Oh, well.

Lucy: They were pretty spectacular.

Maya: It was quite interesting. Felt like driving through a mini-Grand Canyon. And yes, please do ask your dad about this place. I'd love to learn more.

Marley: Isn't it?

Nessa: Thank you!

Andrea: I wish I could have seen Yellowstone on this trip, too. I've never been there, despite growing up in Utah and having a mother from Wyoming. One day, though...

Jude: I get that. I think we all have things like that in the places where we live. :-)

VJ: It was pretty stark. But there's a beauty in the starkness that always blows me away. I'd like to see these formations at sunset.

Cele: Perhaps we can persuade Maya's dad to go on a road trip with all of us...
