In Residence

Blair House: The official state guest house of the President of the United States.
President-elect Obama and his family moved into this residence today.

Maybe this is only news here, but today, President-elect Barack Obama and his family moved into Blair House. Since the beginning of the year they've been living in the Hay-Adams Hotel. Originally, they'd requested Blair House, which is where presidents-elect generally live for a few days until their inauguration. The Obamas requested the house early because their children were starting school in Washington on January 5. Unfortunately, Blair House was booked and they had to take up temporary residence in the Hay-Adams.

The Hay-Adams: Temporary home of the Obama's

Blair House is the official state guest house of the President of the United States. Though it doesn't look all that large in the front, the house boasts 119 rooms and is comprised of four attached rowhouses with 70,000 square feet of living space--larger than the White House. The Hay-Adams is a hotel on the corner of H and 16th Streets overlooking Lafayette Square and St. John's Episcopal Church. It has stunning views of the White House, the Mall, and the Jefferson Memorial. The hotel's motto is: "Where nothing is overlooked but the White House."

I'm glad you told us about Blair House, I thought it looked tiny!

Surely they could have moved the guests to the hotel and the next President into the house?! Couldn't he have demanded it. Actually, probably not the best way to start off - "Don't you know who I am?!" Lol!

Interesting, I had never thought about where they would be staying.

Well, ya learn something every day. I am smarter than I was yesterday.

Then again, I've forgotten some essential stuff overnight too. Please shove more info into my head to keep me on pace.

I am thinking of their children. I hope they are comfortable and well taken care of during this transition.

I'm familiar with Hay-Adams but never heard of the Blair House. I've learned so much from you. I am grateful.

Marley: I learned something new with this, too, because I thought it was just the original house. Of course, I suppose if I'd really thought about it, I would have known the government bought up the surrounding buildings for security and space purposes alone. In other words, it was my "Well, duh!" moment.

Rob: I invited them to stay at my house, but could only offer them the 3/4 bath in the basement. They turned me down.

VJ: One of the people who recently stayed at Blair House (and part of the reason the Obama's couldn't get it) was former Australian PM John Howard, who was in town to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Pres. Bush for his support of the Iraq war. That said, though, other arrangements could have been made for Howard. Like, he could have stayed with the ambassador of Australia or something. And yes, Tuesday won't be here soon enough for many of us.

GIL: I try to learn at least one new thing every day. So far, it's the only consist thing in my life. Would that everything else were so consistent and sure.

Andrea: Based on the news, the kids are doing well and are settling nicely into their respective schools. Glad I could provide something new today!

Oh My! Do they need 119 rooms? I like the first photo. The colors and perspective are great.

Maya: No, but apparently PM John Howard of Australia did. I've just added a Washington Post article to the end of the entry.
