No!

No Trespassing / No Traspasar : Construction Site : Columbia Heights

This month's City Daily Photo Blog Theme is No. As in, signs that communicate a boundary, border, law, or rule regarding expected behavior. To that end, this is a set of signs I found posted on a construction site in Columbia Heights. The neighborhood has a high concentration of Spanish-speaking residents and workers, hence the bilingual signage.

Guess they really want you to stay out.

I think I got the message! Have a fun theme day . . .

Janet Kincaid said...

Jim: So it would seem! And with an echo, no less!

Slim: Good! I can check you off the list now. :-)

Wow! I get the point! Great find!

Ft. Lauderdale: Welcome! And thanks!

Kelly: Kind of hard to miss, eh?

Very nicely photographed. I dont think i've seen translated 'no' signs before! Great choice :)

Fences & signs, no question. I like that you have just enough of what's behind the fence to make me want to know what's there. But the sign says no!
Thanks for stopping by my site today,
- Mitch

Even me, French speaking, I've got the message!

Well, guess there is "No" chance I'll be going in there! :-) Happy Theme Day to you, and thanks for stopping by (all of) my blogs! BTW -- I'll never be tired of you! :-)

that is an absolute definite no

No doubt about the message. Good photo!

I do not want to pass

D: Translated signs are pretty common in the U.S., but you're mostly out of luck if you don't speak English or Spanish!

Mitch: I was lucky to get that much of the construction in the picture. There was a barrier up, otherwise, I'd be standing in the middle of the street getting run over by cement trucks! Thanks for stopping by!

Alice: Thank goodness for pictograms, no?

Ptowngirl: Thanks! You had a great assortment of "no" signs on your blogs today. I only aspire to be as diligent! :-)

Hyde: Pretty clear, isn't it?

J.A.: Thanks! Nothing better than clarity in two languages!

Bergson: And it's a good thing, too! They were running hot tar up to the roof the day I was there. Talk about hazardous!

USelaine said...

But are they sure about that?

Funny comment you left on my post! :-)

Hey, your photo signs have the look of danger--good one!

iBlowfish said...

With those signs posted, I don't believe somebody missed it. Cool picture.

Josy said...

--after reading some comments here--thank goodness you weren't run over by cement trucks. :)

Happy theme day!

 gmirage said...

that is really one to be followed! Peligro is the same in our language (filipino). Its interesting that they put 'danger' before the warning no? Happy theme day!

Hi Janet: Thanks for visiting. I like your choice for the Theme Day. In Australia we don't get many cautionary signs written in other languages - only tourist signs seem to qualify for that.

Kim said...

Janet, Your shot has a really nice graphic quality! I'm used to seeing bilingual signs, which are the norm out here on the west coast, but it does surprise me to see them in the mid-Atlantic area.

A little bit of overkill, maybe they could add a few more languages.

Petrea Burchard said...

Okay, okay, I get it! Comprendo!

marley said...

Nice to see that No is the same in most languages!

Happy Theme Day :)

Ham said...

But doesn't a sign like that make you want to foind out more? Why is it dangerous? How long would I have to stay to make it dangerous?

Janet Kincaid said...

USElaine: I can see where there might be room for doubt.... :-)

Kuanyin: I loved the photo on your blog. It cracked me up! What I want to know is, is there someone who stands around and enforces the 3 minute rule?

iBlowfish: I agree. You'd have to be pretty dumb to mess this one!

Josy: Getting run over by a cement truck would have been a really bad day!

Mirage: Peligro is one of the first Spanish words I ever learned! It's a fun word.

Julie: They don't print signs in Australia in English and Maori? (Or am I confusing you with NZ?) Bilingual signs are fun!

Kim: Thanks! It's not often I see a bilingual sign around here, but when I do it reminds me of living in the Bay Area. The neighborhood where I shot this is predominately Hispanic/Latino/Dominican.

John: They could probably add an Ethiopian language, along with Tagalog and maybe French. It would certainly make it more interesting if they did!

Petrea: Are you sure? ;-)

Marley: Yes, it is. Although, your signs are far more polite than ours. We're a bit brusque over here!

Ham: Sometimes it does. In this case, though, the idea of hot tar or steel beams falling on me was enough to keep me on the street side of the fence!

THANKS to everyone who stopped by and left a comment today! It was great fun visiting each of your blogs and seeing your interpretations of this month's theme. Looking forward to next month!

Here signs are bilingual too.
Thanks for stoping by, I find cool your way of thinking and I agree with you :)

the style of these signs is universal, which is good for the workers safety.

Great shot! Happy Theme Day!

I guess one sign is not enough. They have so many of it!

Happy Theme Day!

No means no but some people just don't take the hint do they.

Uma: Bilingual is fun, isn't it? It gives me a chance to practice another language.

Julia: Agreed! And pictograms are even better.

Mo: Thanks! Sort of dull in comparison to your golden boy, though. I loved that picture and the history of the London fires.

Keropok Man: You're right. Some people need to be told more than once!

Ken: Or, as my mother says, "There's an exception to the rule born every minute!"

Ram: Thanks! Glad you stopped by. See you 'round the planet!

Jilly said...

They sure made their point. Nice one for today's theme.

Those signs on the construction site is very smiler in here at NZ.
It must be someone selling them to world wide. I know Japanese one's different.

Janet Kincaid said...

Ben: This is good information! I would love to see a bilingual sign from NZ. Thanks for stopping by!
