In the Leafy Tree Tops...

Squirrel munching nut in tree limbs

As I've been out and about, I've tried to pay attention to things going on in the trees above me and making an effort to get better at taking pictures of critters and the like. Here are just a few of my valiant efforts over the last few weeks.

Bumblebee buzzing away from the bush in which it was bumbling about.

I caught me a squirrel and a cardinal. Oh, and a bee in a bush. I love watching the squirrels scurry around the house and neighborhood! The other morning, I watched four of them chasing each other across the telephone wires. The frontrunner took a flying leap and made the tree perpendicular to the wire. The second squirrel made it, too. The third little fellow jump a little too soon and barely made the tree. The fourth one stopped, chattered, turned around and went back the way they'd all come!

A cardinal in the tree behind my house

Cardinals defy adequate adjectival description. They are simply stunning in color and playfulness. The day I caught this little guy, there were three of them--two males and a female. I tried to get all three in one photo, but they wouldn't sit still for very long. I was lucky to get this decent picture! But, boy, they are beautiful.

Enjoy!

Wonderful pics! This bee looks soooo close, eek... and what a beautiful red cardinal. Maybe we need to be bird whisperers? I think I'm finally getting by rabbit whispering down. They let me get about 2 feet away before they scamper off. Waskily, wabbits.

Andrea: That bee was close! I would love to be a bird and bug whisperer. (If you want to see the work of one, check out London Daily Nature Photo. It's in the links on my blog.) So, when are you going to post wabbit pictures? Huh? Huh?

Lori: Thanks! They're so pretty.

Marley: Thank you! I'm always happy when I bee shot turns out better than expected.

Cardinals are sooooooo cool. This spring a cardinal couple made a lovely nest deep inside one of the red quinces we have at the cottage. Ms Cardinal spent a lot of time in that lil' nest and I was dreaming of wonderful macro shots (the nest was about two feet below one of the kitchen windows). Unfortunately, something happened, no idea what, a couple of weeks ago. The eggs were broken and Ms Cardinal was gone. :(

We think that maybe something ate the eggs. A squirrel? A larger bird?

Ming: Thank you!

Fénix: Oh, that's a sad story. :-( I have starlings that built a nest in my gutters, which makes me unhappy. Had it been cardinals, I wouldn't care and I'd be thrilled!

That bee shot is great! I can't believe you got in that close.

Love the writing about the squirrels too. Good story!

Maya: I can't either. I'm not sure who was more stunned: me or the bee! As for the squirrels, they crack me up. They're good for hours and hours of entertainment.
