The United States Capitol Building

This is the front of the U.S. Capitol building, though you can't really tell that because of the backlighting. Not only that, but there's a big, ugly, 10' high security wall around the perimeter while they're finishing construction on a multi-bajillion dollar underground visitor's center (there will be no returning monies on this project), so this is a nice way to show you the Capitol without showing all the crappy security walls.

I'm not going to give a lot of information about the Capitol in this entry, because I want better pictures to go with the information. Currently, I'm on Blossom Watch 2008 and as soon as the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin pop, I'll be heading downtown to take photos. When I do, I'll also shoot better photos of the Capitol and provide interesting facts and figures then.

What a dramatic sky Janet...with the church like structure makes it creepy, well done!

B.C.: I am, too! I'm told the best time to go shooting is around sunrise or just as the sun is going down. Of course, the cherry blossoms signal the beginning of tourist season in D.C., so earlier is always better if you want to avoid the tour buses. Ugh. Love the tax revenue, hate the crowds!

Gee: Glad you were finally able to see the photo. I'd never looked at the Capitol Dome as resembling a church dome, but now that you mention it, it does. Good eye!

I like this photo, the tree is dramatic and so is the sky.
Pity about the mamoth amount of money our governments spend on buildings when children else where starve. I look forward to the blossoms! I am waiting for leaves to fall as we are moving into Autumn.

Very interesting info which I hadn't picked up on over here (UK)- remember passing through Washington years ago and being shipped off the plane in a high people carrier on wheels...

Informative blog!

Lisa: What's really discouraging about government spending are the cost overruns. They start out saying, "Such-and-such will cost $95 million" and in the end, it costs $173 million. It's ridiculous and wasteful. I wish we had a greater choice about how our taxes were used by our government. If I had my way, there would be a set of check boxes on your tax form where you could designate where your money goes. If we had that, departments with egregious cost overruns (like Defence and Homeland Security) would learn to tighten their belts ASAP.

Oops. I just went all political there. Sorry 'bout that!

Julie: Welcome! I've just been looking at your blogs and WOW! You do some amazing work in so many media. Very lovely.

Sounds like you flew through Dulles International Airport when you were here. I'm happy to report, they're replacing those awful, smelly people movers with an underground train system!

I like the storminess (probably not a word, but I like it ntl) of this image.

Can't wait for cheery, cherry blossoms! Wish we had some here, but the Jacarandi tree is a beauty. I'll have to see if I can get some cool pics of this tree. Green leaves and purple flowers.

AE: I think it rained later that day, actually. I'd love to see a photo of the tree you mentioned. I've never heard of a Jacarandi tree. Sounds so exotic... Or like a drink that features an umbrella!
