Tifereth Israel Congregation

Tifereth Israel Congregation:
A friendly, communal synagogue at the northern edge of the city

Only a few more churches and synagogues left on 16th Street and then I'll be done with this series! Located at 7701 16th Street NW is the Tifereth Israel Congregation. Tifereth describes itself as "a participatory, egalitarian, and innovative Conservative synagogue" that is "welcoming, 'hamish' and committed." (I'm not sure what it means to be "hamish." If anyone out there knows, I'd love to learn more.)

Beautiful lines and well thought architecture for this congregation.
I love the placement and simplicity of the Menorah.

Years ago I worked with a guy named Hamish, he was from Australia. It is a Scottish name in origin, it means 'held by the heel" in Hebrew or Jacob in name.

I think it means "community" in conservative Judaic congregations.

That's my 3cents.

Andrea: I like your three cents! I found similar definitions of Hamish through Google and Merriam-Websters, but wondered if there might be something more going on in its adaptation as a verb. And you're right: the menorah on this building is quite lovely.

I like the contrast of red and white!

Maya: Good eye on that! The red and white are nice. Somehow I missed that. (Of course, this picture is nearly a year old, which might explain my oversight.)

The definition for Hamish here is from Yiddish, and it has many meaning all closely related. Among these are warm, welcoming, loving, domestic, home-made, cozy, snug, familiar, intimate, informal.
