Two Things Challenge: Local / International

Two of my hats. On the left, the local brand.
On the right, the international brand complete with flair.

This week's Two Things Challenge was Local / International. Originally, I was going to take pictures of the U.S. Department of State's main lobby with the flags of nations, but I didn't want to find parking in Foggy Bottom and I had visions of contending with some overzealous State Department police officer about security and prohibitions on photography. (Besides, I had to make German's Chocolate Cake for dessert this evening, which is not German, by the way.) So, once again, I looked around the house.

Local: Washington National's baseball hat. International: Pins on my Bergsteigerhut from Austria.

These two hats are from totally different parts of the world. The one on the left is my baseball hat for our local team, the Washington Nationals. The one on the right is my Bergsteigerhut (alpine hat) from when I lived in Austria 20 years ago. My Bergsteiger has a pin on it from every city I lived in and each city's respective province. In order: Linz in Upper Austria/Oberösterreich; Vienna; Wiener Neustadt in Lower Austria/Neiderösterreich; and Villach in Caranthia/Kärnten.

Nice hats! I didn't join in this week due to work. I'll be there next week though :)

I didn't know that about the cake. But, I guess that type of chocolate is not my favorite. That must be why I think the cake is too sweet! They should have stuck with bittersweet...

Excellent! I love the Austrian hat - very nice keepsake to have. I just realized that while you were in Austria, we lived in Switzerland. Maybe you were in Salzburg on Christmas of 1989?

Marley: Thanks! Ironically, I was thinking of you with this challenge. Look forward to seeing your return this week. Hope work has been successful.

Arlene: Thanks! Is that the first time you've seen it?

Maya: Yep. True story. Although, in truth, I didn't know that about this kind of cake until recently. As for the sweetness of the cake, I think most of that lies with the frosting. The cake itself is fairly basic, but the coconut and the sugar in the frosting take the sweet factor up by 100.

Tash: Just missed your comment. I love my Austrian hat. It's one of the few things I brought home with me and a keepsake I cherish. The Christmas of 1989, I was in Linz. Never made it to Salzburg while I was living in Austria, but it's on my list of must-see places before I die!

Love the Austrian version. Wonder how it would look on the streets of Columbiana, Alabama?

Rob: I thought so, too! And yes, living in Austria was pretty darn cool! One of these days, I'd like to do it again.

Larry: If I ever visit Alabama, I'll bring the hat with me and we'll talk a walk along Columbiana's downtown and see how people react. Deal?
