Portrait of a Train by a Middle-Aged Photographer

Portrait of a Train

Whenever I have to meet with clients downtown, I usually take advantage of Metro rather than driving. It's cheap, I don't have to find and pay for parking, and someone else gets to do the driving. The other day while I was on the train, I noticed this mirror at the Brookland-CUA station. On the return trip home, I disembarked at this station just to be able to take pictures of Metro trains reflected in this convex mirror. Unfortunately, it was nearly impossible to get a picture of the train without factoring myself in the scene.

This isn't a flattering picture of me, obviously--no one looks good convex--but it's a good picture of the Metro train and the direction it's heading, which is downtown and then into the Maryland suburbs to Shady Grove.

As an aside, I'm wearing my pink windowpane Brooks' Brothers shirt and my pair of typewriter key cufflinks!

Aren't you getting all clever on us. I would never have thought of doing that. I was amusing myself photographing raindrops on a seesaw, yawn.....
And you and I both know what would make that outfit complete! HA

I look ok convex and really good concave. It's the flat mirrors I look scary in .

Getting off the train to take the picture went above and beyond the call of duty.

VJ: I try! As for the pink suede shoes, can I get them in this style? If you can get them for me in pink in that type of shoe or a Bass Weejun loafer, I'll wear them just for you!

Wayne: Mirrors should just be outlawed in general. Since it was commuter hours, I knew I could get another train in 2 - 3 minutes. If it had been the middle of the day when trains only come every 10 - 15 minutes, I wouldn't have done it. See? Not as generous of spirit as you thought I was, am I? (And I think that's just about the worst sentence I've written in a long time. Sorry. You get my drift, though, right?)

I still think the sacrifice should be acknowledged. And I've wrote way worster sentences than yours.

Very nice angle, a really good way to make unusual photo.

I replied to your email. Did you not get it? Can you let me know, as my email could be up the shute!

That's a great picture and a huge mirror. I haven't noticed any like that in the UK, I think they use CCTV a lot for the same purpose.
This reminded me of the first time I came to London (in 1969); A small number of platforms on the older lines are on a relatively sharp curve which creates a 6 inch gap next to the train. The consequence of this simplification during building was that they had to employ one or two people to spend their day saying quite loudly "mind the gap" every few seconds while there was a train in the station. Nowadays, of course, the computer says it!
Anyhow, thanks again for taking the trouble to post a lovely picture.

Wayne: Thank you. You're very kind. I've read worsterer sentences than the one you writed in my comments down there in the lower 48 because I'm fightin' fer the Ahmericun people who wants big sentences in Washington--and I'm not a Washington person--but all that hot air from those verbs and such are just not good for the good people of Ahmerica, doncha know? Hey there, Joe the Plumber! How ya doin' eh?

:-P

Sorry. Seems I lost control of my faculties for a moment and channeled Alaska Spice. Whew. Scary!

JM: Thanks! I had fun with this one.

Marley: It turned out better than I expected. I especially love the blue sky in the mirror. Oh, dang! I should have used this for Skywatch. Oh well.

And yes, I got your email. For some reason, AOL stuck it in my spam folder. I have remedied that and it will never happen again!

Pierre: I have a feeling there was probably a CCTV camera behind that mirror. Somewhere in the bowels of Metro command central I've been officially tagged or something.
