Complementary

Orange maple leaves against a blue sky

Some more fall color from around the neighborhood. This time, a maple tree in the early stages of changing casts a vibrant orange across its leaves. Below, a mix of green and yellow in an oak.

Oak leaves turning yellow

I love the complementary qualities in both of these photos--the orange and blue and the green and yellow make me smile.

Chrysanthemums: a fall flower

Another sign of fall? Chrysanthemums. People pull up their pansies, begonias, and lantana and replace them with 'mums. I always think of 'mums as cemetery flowers. They're inexpensive and potted, you can buy them at the grocery store, and they stay in bloom longer than cut flowers. These pink ones where bordering the walkway of a home in the Takoma neighborhood.

Well bless my soul. DC, you have "pinkified" your blog today. I knew I would rub off on you! :) Let me guess- y ou have on pink flats too???

Those fall trees are the best. No color here to speak of. I will just enjoy yours and maybe run over to North Metro CP and listen to Andrea Bocelli croon "Les Feuilles Morts" again.

VJ: I'm always full of surprises! Still no pink flats, though. I have to draw the line somewhere.

Mirage: Yes, I think Mother Nature has finally changed into her fall line-up. Glad you liked these pictures.

Three lovely colourful photos. The colour of the 'mum is so vivid. I've just realised I haven't posted an autumn colour photo yet. Thanks for the inspiration for tomorrow!

Gorgeous colors of autumn. A surprise bonus is the summery color of the mums!

I just love it! the winter storm we had killed all the vestiges of fall here so it's nice to see some fall- and i love any season that involves pink. These are gorgeous!

Marley: Thanks! I'm partial to the 'mum, too!

Rob: I hadn't really thought of the 'mum as summery, but in the case of this one, I think you're right.

Prof: Yeah, I'm glad it's not snowing here. Yet. Rumor has it from the almanac, though, that we're in for a rough winter this year. Blech. Glad you're enjoying the fall colors here. There will be more in the weeks ahead.

My favourite season to photograph and this is why. e array of colours is superb. The mum's are so sharp.

Babooshka: I have to agree. After spending time photographing spring--which is beautiful in its own right-- and fall, I've decided the latter is my favorite season. The explosion of color is exciting and energizing!

Oh, those glorious maple leaves of D.C. area autumns! Unforgettable.

Those mums are a beautiful pink indeed, quite unusual.

I was quite fond of mums back there in D.C., my favorite were the dark crimson ones, which turned a burnt orange towards Thanksgiving. I usually got them at the end of August, then hid them for a couple of weeks at the back of the house (no one wants to have a reminder of fall approaching in the heat of summer).

Merisi: Ironically, I just took a picture of a crimson 'mum this morning during my walk. If it turned out well, I'll post it just for you!

Maya: Thank you! (Though not on par with your Juanita Park pictures from the other day. Those were breathtaking!)
