Metal

Custom brass doorhandles on the Elizabeth Arden Day Spa & Salon

This month's City Daily Photo Blog theme is Metal. I was in D.C.'s Chevy Chase neighborhood yesterday afternoon to pick up purple food coloring at Sur La Table, (I made a purple velvet cake, for the record. But I digress...) and snapped a few pictures of various kinds of metal. These two pictures were my favorite. The first shows the door handles for the Elizabeth Arden Day Spa & Salon. I loved the bright red doors and the shiny, ornate brass handles and thought this was perfect for the theme!

Mall skylight...

The second one is the skylight in the mall across from the Mazza Galerie--one of only two shopping malls in the District. (The other is Georgetown Park Mall in Georgetown.) To see a few more photos, visit Standing Room Only.

Happy Theme Day, everyone!

Everyone loves the doors, but they creep me out for some reason. I get this mental image of some kind of hoity-toity bordello in New York City.

(Don't ask me why.)

But the second photo, well, I am ALWAYS a fan of well-composed geometry. :)

Lovely photos, both!

Two super photos but I really do love that first one. Now wouldn't that be great - enter those doors and come out a new and younger person - well, minus a goodly few dollars, I'm sure. Those are doors with attitude!

I love the door handles, too. Very interesting shapes. Remind me of treble clefs in a way.

Sehr schön, a very nice motif with its strong colors and the symmetry.

I really like your cropping choices on both of those. I'm a sucker for the saturation of the red and brass too.

Purple cake?!

Beautiful red doors. If they were in Boston I would post them for my Wednesday doorway series.

Hey everyone: Thank for your comments! The consensus seems to be that we all like the red door with one or two leaning toward the skylight.

I don't participate in SkyWatch Fridays (though I probably should), but it seems like I managed to capture something for both!

That skylight shot is spectacular! I've been going to that mall off and on for 15 years and never bothered to look up. I like the rest of your site too. And thanks for visiting mine.

Have you tried the spa treatment at Elizabeth Arden?

There is one here on 5th Avenue but it looks way too expensive for me to even step in through the doors.

Bernie: That was the first time I'd ever been in that mall. And I didn't even go into the Mazza Gallerie on the west side of Wisconsin Ave. You have a great site! It's inspiring me to make a road trip to Middleton.

Rafa: Thanks! And you, too, Ram!

Maya: Me, too! I was so thrilled when I stumbled on that door and its stylized handles.

Ming: I've never been in an Arden Salon either. To be honest, the whole thing looked a little hinky to me. I mean, the window displays flanking the doors were rather minimalist and boring and did little to say "HEY! Cool Spa Here!! Come in!!! Come in!!!" In fact, all I could think of was a massage parlor I use to pass on my walk down 2nd Street to work everyday when I worked in San Francisco! I'm sure Liz Arden isn't running that kind of business, but still.

That said, I've no doubt Liz Arden is way outside my budget!

Awsome shots! Wow, love the first one. Heck, I'm glad I'm not the only one fascinated with door handles and latches. I got some weird looks when I was framing up a shot of a window latch in Versailles.

Nice photos!! Very shapely door knobs(pulls)

Rob: Thanks! The door was just shouting out to be photographed, so I obliged! You'll have to post your pictures from Versailles. I'm sure they're fabulous!

Rodney: They are rather shapely, aren't they?

Love the red doors with the fancy knobs. I was in Georgetown about a year ago visiting Washington, DC. I will check out your other blog. I thought it was a nice little town.

Janet Kincaid said...

Carraol: Thanks! And Happy Sunday to you, too!

LV2SCPBK: Thanks for stopping by! Georgetown is a fun neighbor and D.C., as a whole, is a decent little town to visit. I like it for its history and things to see.

Mary Jo: Thanks! I hope people enjoy visiting it. Welcome and, as they say in this semi-southern town, come back again soon, ya' hear?
