Two Things Challenge: Work / Book

Where I work...

This week's Two Things Challenge was Work / Book. I thought about shooting photos of my backyard, which is currently a work in progress, but it's too embarrassing. Then I thought about taking pictures of office buildings downtown, but that seemed sort of dull, especially since most D.C. architecture of the newer office building variety is so unextraordinary.

Instead what I went with is my desk. I work from home as a writer and editor and this is where I do my work. Note the green English-to-German dictionary on my desk. It's part of a two volume set I bought when I lived in Austria. It's been getting a little bit of use recently as I've been leaving comments on April's blog in German.

The book I'm reading...

This second picture is the book I'm currently reading, among others (I have about six in my pile I'm working on, not to mention the to-be-read pile I have with about 25 books in it. And then there are all the books in my library I've read parts of, but need to read all of....) I'm a little late coming to the Harry Potter party, but I'm making up for it. I've read The Sorcerer's Stone, The Chamber of Secrets, and The Prisoner of Azkaban in the last month and just started The Goblet of Fire yesterday afternoon. This is a picture of the latter on my bed, which is where I do most of my reading.

Workbook: That little notebook is my lifeline. Without it, I'm lost!

And finally, here are work and book combined. Again, a shot of my desk, but in this one you can see my notebook to the left of my MacBook. This is where I write notes about things I'm working on. It's also where I keep important information. In truth, I should probably keep that little workbook under lock-and-key.

There you go. A little glimpse into my work life and what I'm reading!

Great to see you have had offers for publishing your photos, and well deserved. Also love the firework pictures, as I know from experience it is very difficult photographing things like this. Let's hope you get that work book used for organising this project, among other things!

Always very interesting to see people's workspaces. I like your teddy.

We have a Darth Vader like that, but it is a money box, and we also have this Harry Potter book, and it has been read by my son. I have tried to read the Potters, but fail to grasp the complex plots.

I used to babysit for a lady who had been at Exeter University a few years before JK, so I know a person who nearly met JK Rowling. We have also been to the Oxford College where they did the films.

Great entry!

You've inspired me to drag out my French/English dictionary and know ole Eric's socks off on PDP!!
I might show a pic of my desk, but not what I'm reading. Everyone would laugh and blog about me behind my back! :)

You are certainly a woman after my own heart! I, too, have a big German/English dictionary that I have to haul out every now and then to read the relatives letters and email and occasionally write one.

I admire you for working at home. I'm debating about whether or not I could do that.

And, I've read all the Harry Potter books but the last one which I am patiently waiting for to come out in paperback. They seem to take years to do so!

Bev: Thanks! It's been fun to have people ask about my photos. Now I'm just trying to figure out whether to go with something like Image Kind or Etsy or what.

Re: Harry Potter... I didn't get into the craze while it was happening because the books weren't alive for me. I've seen all the movies, but still couldn't get into the books. Then my brother gave me the audio books read by English actor Jim Dale and I became a total convert! My suggestion: get the books in audio format and listen to them. Jim Dale does an EXCELLENT job. There's also an audio version read by Stephen Fry that's suppose to be quite good, too, but I haven't heard his. My recommendation would be to go with Jim Dale.

Virginia: Mon Dieu! Bon chance with the French. (That's the sum total of my French, aside from things like C'est la vie and Parlez vous Francaise?) Hey, I'd love to know what you're reading and I promise I won't blog about you behind your back!

Diane: Glad I could be your inspiration! :-) Harry Potter ROCKS!

Maya: That's right! Your grandfather was German. Isn't it a great language? I love it!

Working from home has its pluses and minuses. I'm hoping to reach a point where I can farm work out to freelancers and editors/writers who want a little extra work on the side. Unless I can get back into a position as managing editor in a publishing house, I'm going to take a stab at doing my own thing.

I went looking for HP7 the other night at the bookstore only to be told it wasn't out yet. Boo. Hiss.:-( I just finished the audio book and all I can say is, it's really, really good! Which of the first six books is your favorite?

Great post. I like seeing work environs. I wish I had paid more attention to this post I would have captured my desk before coming home for the long weekend. I didn't think anyone really wanted to look at bookshelves so I abandoned this week's challenge.

Harry Potter is great fun. I too am behind and need to read "The Goblet of Fire" but sort of lost interest.

I just noticed your earlier post on what to do about your photos.

Have you ever considered self-publishing a book?

I'd also consider an Etsy storefront and create your own web page with PayPal so you can test the waters without large investment. My 2 cents.

If I could get my sis to slow down
she'd be a good person to talk to about marketing around town, gallery openings etc.

Andrea: My work space is small, but effective! I think...

I'm still going back and forth on what to do with my photography. I've entered a competition that goes up on the 26th and a friend just emailed me about DC FotoFest 2008, so I'm going to look into that. I haven't thought about self-publishing. That might have to be the next project.

I'd love to meet with your sister. As I say, I don't know what I know. I just know I don't know!

Ah, the glimpse behind the scenes of D.C. Confidential. I was thinking about using our home desk, but Mrs. D Lens works from home. Lucky, no irritating traffic commutes, saves gas amd miles. Ijust realized there is so much to read and not enough time.

Rob: That's what I like about working from home. Plus, I don't have to be bothered with office politics and gossip. It's quite refreshing.

Very interesting entry. I immediately recognized the 'Pons'. Welcher Zufall! Genau dieses zweibändige Wörterbuch habe ich auch.

Harry Potter habe ich alle gelesen, in English, I've read them all. Well, and now, I've jsut finished 'The beautiful diva from St.-Jacques' from a French author, but in German. Oh, I like those Fred Vargas-mystery crime stories.

April: Ich schaetze meine Woerterbuecher! Or, as we say here, I "heart" my dictionaries. They're one of the best things I bought and brought back with me from Austria.

Ich soll' Harry Potter auf Deutsch lesen. Hmmm...
