Praise the Squirrel!

Baptist church with doors just hollerin' out for y'all to come on in...

Yesterday's 2.7 mile walk took me through parts of Brightwood, Takoma, and Shepherd Park with a final stretch along Georgia Avenue again. When I walked past the Shepherd Park Baptist Church, the doors called out to be photographed. They were practically screaming "COME ON IN!" I just stood on the sidewalk and took a picture.

Hey! Dude! Throw me back my beads, man...

Part of my walk included a couple of blocks on Aspen Street, where I captured this cute little guy chillin' in the gutter. He looked very Mardi Gras up there, only sans beads and baubles. He sat very still for me and was quite photogenic. Finally, an animal that cooperated!

Maybe he's looking for a way down. Cool door shot. Despite Winston, the little white terrier, the squirrels are bold enough to dig up Mrs. D Lens flower pots on our deck. Sort of like Caddyshack here, dog and I just watch the fun. :)

The door is so bright. It makes a great photo. I'm also glad that you captured a critter! Great photo :)

Rob: I found a flower pot on my property that was all dug up! I know it was squirrels and it cracked me up.

Mirage: Thanks!

Marley: When I saw that door, I thought "Perfect!" And the squirrel was just begging to be photographed.

I used to think squirrels were cute. Sine i moved to this neighborhood of a thousand trees 4 years ago, I don't feel that way anymore. They bolding march onto my patio and dig up every pot. Sit in the trees and gnaw pinecones like a ear of corn and throw all over creation. Well they do what squirrels do. Bah humbug.
D.C. I did like you photos however. Mr. Lincoln is one of my favorites too. I added 2 new favs in Nov.- World War II Memorial (at night it is amazing) and the Roosevelt Memorial.
PS WHY can't you have a tripod? Do terrorists use them to disguise themselves as photographers????

Maya: They're fun little critters to try and capture.

Virginia: I think that would turn me off to squirrels, too. Pesky rodents!

The deal with no tripods, I just found out from a very nice man named Sgt. Walters in the Office of Special Events for the U.S. Capitol Police, is they are a traffic violation. Meaning, they create a potential tripping hazard and if everyone who visited the Capitol brought one, they'd create a congestion problem. Also, if the feet of one's tripod aren't adequately covered in some kind of protective, cushioning material, they scratch the marble surfaces.

I'm sure there's a terrorist prevention element in there, too, but of course they're not going to disclose that. That said, I've completed my application and will be faxing to the U.S. Capitol Police shortly.

I have always loved the "if everyone did it" mentality. Yea sure, every Joe Blow visiting D.C. is going to lug a tripod with him. Well, it's a comfort to know that you and your tripod will soon be officially official with the Capitol Police.

V: I know!! I thought the same thing, too! I also get hassled at the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, but I know have a retort for those spots. If I get harangued by the rent-a-cop, I tell them a park ranger told me I could use a tripod. I got so tired of being told I couldn't use one, I finally went straight to the horse's mouth and asked a National Park Service Ranger directly. Wish I could do the same for the Capitol. Sheesh.
