Driving Miss Me

I-66 eastbound approaching the exits for I-495/the Beltway.
Behind the highway signs is the Dunn Loring Metro station.

When I win the lottery (yeah, right!), one of the things I'm going to have is a driver-driven car. Then that way taking pictures like these won't be as dangerous and stupid. Yesterday found me out in Virginia, helping my parents with another part of their ongoing renovation project. As I didn't get out for my daily walk and I couldn't think of anything remotely interesting to photograph in the suburbs (I need to work on that. I'm sure there's something special I could find), I set my camera on the dashboard of the car and here are the results.

Tunnel on Beach Drive under the National Zoo.

These pictures were taken on I-66--the east/west corridor that connects D.C. with Arlington County and then westward into the Virginia suburbs. I-66 will take you from Washington, D.C. to Arlington, Falls Church, Fairfax, Manassas, Gainesville, and Front Royal. It terminates at I-81, the north/south corridor that stretches from Pennsylvania to Tennessee--and along Rock Creek Parkway and Beach Drive in the city. To see a few more of these shots, visit Standing Room Only.

The passenger in this car littered in the park. Lazy git!

This last photo is a boring picture, I know, and you're probably wondering, "Huh?" There are very few things I detest in life, but one thing I can't abide is littering. I think people who litter are disrespectful and lazy. So, the point of this picture? Right before I took it, the passenger in this car threw a piece of trash out the window. If you live in Maryland and you recognize this car smack the tall guy with the big, bushy beard who littered from the comfort of this vehicle. Thanks.

I will never get used to the littering in London. It seems it is a way of life here. Just toss something right where you stand. Two police where assulted by a group of youths last week because they asked a young woman to pick up the rubbish she just dropped on the footpath.

Oh Lordy, you need a designated driver! Glad to know the Vigilante Litter Patrol is on the job. My pet littering peeve is folks that throw their cigarettes out the window at stop lights. There are places around here that have piles of butts in the gutters. Hello! Cigarette filters DO NOT decompose-ever!

I like that tunnel photo especially - makes it look like a refuge from the dark night outside rather than a place of entrapment to be gotten through. 8^)

I like your form of justice! Perhaps the police should try it! lol :)

The tunnel photo is really good.

Mo: That's a horrifying story! Police assaulted for asking a young woman to pick up her trash?! Unbelievable! And yet, somehow not surprising.

Virginia: I know. I'm just waiting for my mother to call and chew me out! Cigarette butts all over the place drive me nuts, too. Get a little tin and store it until you can safely throw it away. Sheesh.

USElaine: Thanks! I like that one, too. It's a pretty short tunnel, which is nice.

Marley: My idea of perfect justice would be installing a cannon on my car that allows me to shoot butterscotch pudding onto cars and their occupants like the litterers. How great would that be? A car covered in pudding that looks like baby poo! LOL!!

Your second photo of the tunnel is wonderful. I think the idea of a driver driven car for your photos would be wholeheartedly endorsed by your parents too:)

hahahaha, litter patrol! Maybe we should all be doing this. Posting photos of litterbugs.

I like the tunnel shot. Nice. I often have my camera out and ready when I'm driving. Sometimes you see something really interesting when stopped at a light. I don't think I could take the shots while driving though. That takes real talent!

CIB: Thanks! I probably should have made that my primary photo for the day. As for Mom... No word from her yet...

Maya: There have been a number of times I've driven past something I've wanted to photograph and have missed it because I was driving. Today's (yesterday's) photo were relatively safe in that the camera was right in front of me on a sticky pad on the dashboard. Of course, relatively safe being the operative word, right? Downright stupid is probably more accurate!

My point and shoot cam has an intervoltometer..er somethig like that. I set it up to take a number of pics at a time intevral. I set it up going to the cabin; results were 100 fabulous shots of the windshield whiper.

Love that tunnel shot, great colors! A great idea, to capture and ridicule those littermongers.

Rob: I've got to upgrade to a DSLR so I can have fun things like intervoltometers and fragosnaggleometers and other James Bond-like stuff! As for your windshield wipers, I'm sure you captured more than that!

OK, one more comment. D.C. I don't condone shooting while driving, even though that tunnel shot was great. I however, have been known to pull over, lower the window and have at it. This is what I refer to as a kindler, gentler "Drive By Shooting" ! I especially like to do it on weekends when my downtown area is dead as a doornail, and I can just pull over wherever I please!

I would have run over, gathered up his trash, walked to his driver's side window and asked him if he was forgetting something. Aargh...

Love the photos from the dash.

Andrea: Oh, you have no idea! I almost did exactly that. Shortly after this picture was snapped, we were stopped at a light, but it wasn't long enough to get out, rap on the window, and have a word. Had it been, my words would have been, "You are a lazy ass."
