Meridian Hill Baptist Church

Meridian Hill Baptist Church: Its spirit carries on

Several weeks ago, I featured photos I took at a five alarm fire in Mount Pleasant. The fire resulted in $20 million in damage: $5 million to the apartment building where the blaze started and which was totally destroyed. Flames from the apartment fire ignited the roof on this church--Meridian Hill Baptist--resulting in $15 million in damages to this edifice. (This photo of the church was taken in February, almost a month prior.)

Meridian Hill Baptist Church at 3146 16th Street NW has been a fixture in the community for more than 100 years. As with several other churches on this stretch of 16th Street, though, I can't find a website with further information on the architecture or history of this church and its congregation. However, the Washington Post reports that members of this congregation are currently sharing space in Prince Georges County, Maryland, with a sister congregation.

Such a shame all that damage. Hopefully the renovation will go quickly.

Rob: It is a shame. I should go back and take a picture from across the street so I can show the fire damaged roof. What's really sad is, the apartment building that caught fire was managed by a company that had been cited more than 1,700 times by the city for code violations!
