Spring?

Crocuses: a sign of spring or a midwinter tease?

After seeing the really cool frog exhibit at National Geographic yesterday, I decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and being downtown and went on a long photo safari. I walked down to the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, then turned around and headed north. I walked from the aforementioned 16th and Penn all the way up to 16th and Colorado--more than four miles uphill. From Colorado, I hooked a right and headed home.

Over the next several weeks, you'll see the results of my walk from America's most powerful home to my humble abode more than five miles away. In that walk, you'll see parks, statues, art, philanthropic institutions, old and new architecture, trade unions, homes, and churches. In fact, tomorrow I'll commence a new feature here on D.C. Confidential I'm calling "The Churches of 16th Street." You'll soon see why.

Today's picture is a bunch of crocuses (croci? What's the plural for crocus?) I found under a tree in front of the office of the National Education Association on 16th and M Streets NW. I hope it's a sign that spring is right around the corner.

Lovely crocus, crocuses and croci. Yep, your choice. ;)

My favorite spring flower, I love crocuses (had to look it up on Dictionary.com).

Lara: Plurals would be easier if we'd just simplify it like you do in German: just add -n/-en to the end of almost everything! Okay, I know. That's not always true. But to your point: learning and using English correctly is a nightmare!

Fenix: And there's the beauty of bastardized American English: we can do whatever the hell we want!

NG: I need to get me a favorite spring flower. I use to love lilacs, but I'm leaning more toward these little wonders that brave the end of winter and pop up earliest.

Anon: Really? I had no idea. I love saffron. Hm. I learned something new today. Thanks for stopping by!

Bobbie: They are lovely! I just hope the ones here survived yesterday's winter weather!

Beautiful photo! You do live in a great area for exploring. I love D.C. for that reason.

Lovely! Was this taken early in the morning? The shining sun seems to affected it well to make it dramatic...I am beginning to see some daffodils showing up here...too bad, I don't know where my camera is lol. Good day!

AE: I love it when gems pop up in little spaces, like flower beds.

Gee: I took this around noon on a very sunny day. The flower bed was in the shadow of an office building.

Lisa: Thanks! Oddly enough, tonight it's 29F/-2C. A stark contrast to the day when I took this picture. It was 61F/16C! And that was only four days ago!
