Reflecting
Between the Lincoln Memorial and the World War II Memorial lies the Reflecting Pool. It makes for wonderful pictures of the Washington Monument. Note also, the Capitol in the background to the right of the Washington Monument. (Here's the same monument, but at sunrise. Note the Capitol on the left.)
Even in Washington, monuments and memorials have hierarchies of importance. Only the most iconic are lit the brightest. They are: the Capitol, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial. Several months ago, the Washington Post featured an article about how monuments and memorials are prioritized. I'd love to share it with you, but it's in the archives and I'd have to pay $3.95 for a copy. (Ironic, given the digital/internet age we live in. Bad customer service, WaPo. Bad.)

now that is a great photo! I am so curious every day to see what is your next post, because your photos get more and more spectacular!
Shame on WaPo. Stunning photo and beautiful sunrise shot. Love the D.C. area, sis lives on Capital Hill nr eastern market.
Great pic! I think I recognise this place...was it in a scene of the Forest Gump Movie?
Funny how some well paid designer found an artistic use for water...clever too!
Beautiful! Very nice shot, D.C. I hope you don't notice my bad spelling these days...last comment I meant idea not ideal...seems my spelling gets worse and worse as I age...arrgghh!
Lara: Thanks! It turned out better than I expected. Pure luck, I'm telling you!
AE: Welcome! Eastern Market is such a cool neighborhood! When you visit your sister, does she take you to EM for breakfast? I have to get up there one of these days and take pictures.
Lisa: Yes, as a matter of fact, the Reflecting Pool was in a big scene in Forrest Gump! Good memory!
Bobbie: Thank you! As for your grammar, I'm in the same boat, so not to worry! We'll be bad at spelling together! ;-)
I have always enjoyed this reflecting pool with the Washington Monument in it. But this pic is magnificent!
Sadly, I have not been to DC since the mid 1980's. That was pre digital age, I shot DC with my old Canon AE1 in black and white film. My H.S. buddy had a darkroom, we developed our own film and pics.
I should try and find those pics. And my reflected Monument.
DL: Thank you! I love the monuments at night. They have such an ethereal quality.
I wish I'd learned how to take pictures with a film camera. I have a Pentax K1000 and I keep thinking I'll take a class in non-digital photography... One day.
Would love to see your pictures from the 80s. Let me know if you find and post them!
psst... don't tell anyone but I must have watched Forest Gump atleast 5 times...lol. Loved it when it came out!
Lisa: Your secret's safe with me, because I've also seen it four or five times! Love that movie!
Love Eastern Market! Sis and brother-in-law live across the street on Pennsylvania. We love to go to market buy food, eat and visit artists by day, pubs by night and see everything else we see.
You can see sis pics here.

AE: Eastern Market ROCKS! I'm so glad the city is rebuilding after the devastating fire they had their last year. It's such an important part of the culture in that neighborhood. I've definitely got to get up there and snap some pictures...
hello there, i was in DC recently, and we went up the washington monument, the views from up there are indeed breathtaking!
we had to leave by 4pm, so we didn't see any of the monuments by night, but this sure looks amazing!
Kunal: I totally missed this comment. Sorry! Washington at night is really beautiful. In fact, I like it better either early in the morning or after dark. The views from the Washington Monument are pretty spectacular!
