Skywatch

MPD Dispatch Tower reaches for the sky

Out walking yesterday, I realized again just how fond I've grown of the Metropolitan Police Department's dispatch tower on Georgia Avenue. It can be seen in upper Northwest Washington from as far away as the U.S. Air Force Memorial in Arlington, Virginia. It's a point of reference in this part of D.C. and, combined with yesterday's blue skies and gauzy clouds, it makes a perfect subject for Skywatch Friday.

That's amazing. I like it too. Did that make you dizzy to shoot that one?

When I saw a thumbnailed version of this picture I thought it was something else in Washington DC. This guy.

Same town. Different structure.

VJ: I can it our Eiffel Tower. Sacrilegious, right? No dizziness in this picture.

Suz: Thanks!

Al: You're referring to a piece of sculpture at the Hirschorn known as the Needle Tower. You can see another picture of it here.

Nuts, and squirrels that crack you up! Lordy you are sharp today girl. Well here in the US we have to "make do" with the humble landmarks we have.

Oh, that looks familiar!
Wasn't it that same dispatch tower that caused electronic auto keys to malfunction?

Greetings from an old DC resident!:-)

VJ: Yeah, I'm sure our French compatriots would blanch to know I refer to this tower as our Eiffel. You make do with what you've got, I guess.

Ida: Thanks!

Merisi: You live in Wien? You lucky, lucky woman. I use to live there and loved it. If I could land a job in Austria, I'd take it in a heartbeat! When you lived in the District, where were you? I don't know if these tower shorted out electronic auto keys, but I suppose it's possible. I'll ask around. Hope to see you in these parts again. I'll certainly be visiting your blog!

CO Lady: Good question. I'm bad at estimating height. I couldn't even begin to guess. The Eiffel Tower is over 1,000 feet high. If this tower is even half that, I'd be surprised. I'll ask around, though, and see if I can get an answer for you.!

Cool angle for this photo. I suppose the only way to get it all in! Nice SWF photo.

I do love your blog. You take the most marvellous photos, this one included. It is also lovely to see photos of places that I get to see on a regular basis. Favorite thing to do is to go visit those museums, and we also had fun visiting the Newseum a while ago. Beautiful city!

Marley: Thanks! Aside from lying on the ground, this is the best get-it-all angle I can get. I wish I could actually go into the enclosure this is in and do a straight up shot.

Denise: Thank you! You're very kind. I enjoy taking photos of DC and its environs and am thrilled so many people enjoy this blog. Especially those who live/have lived here!

Maya: Photographing things vertical is always fun and a great challenge. This tower and the USAF Memorial are two of my favorites.

Lisa: Thanks for the award! It's nice to be recognized twice. I'll add your name to the list of those who have given me the Arto de Pico.

Prof: I thought so, too! :-)

A rival to the Eiffel Tower? Without a lift it can't compete. Nice angle for a shot.

Love the angle of your "Eiffel" Tower, against that rich blue sky.

Arija: Nothing can top the Tour de Eiffel. Not even this!

Mary Jo: Thanks!

Babooshka: Thank you!

I lived all over the place,
from Virginia Ave NW, New Mexico Avenue NW, to off Bradley Avenue in Bethesda, MD, all together almost a quarter century. I moved to Vienna three years ago, and have fallen in love with living in this city. I loved D.C. very much, and do miss a lot of things and my friends, but Vienna is sweet comfort indeed. Most of my friends from DC have visited me more than once since I moved, sometimes I am not at all sure were I actually live, since I continue to see my friends quite regularly. My blog grew out of the promise to keep my friends in D.C. up to date about my life in Vienna. ;-)

Thank you for putting me on your list. I messed mine up some time ago, but hope to create a newer, more comprehense one before the year is over.

Merisi: Did you go to school at GW or AU? Living in Vienna is divine. I loved the nine months I spent there! How does one land a job in that lovely country? I'd like to live there again. It's so bucolic.
